‘Northern Ireland Deserves Better’
Party members from throughout Northern Ireland, and a number of invited guests and organisations, have discussed Housing and Homes, Education, Tax Avoidance, the Environment and the Media at the annual Northern Ireland conference.
The conference theme ‘ Northern Ireland Deserves Better’ was also explored in discussions on sectarianism, the failures of the Assembly and ongoing social and economic problems.
Single socialist candidate
Conference also heard calls for for a single socialist candidate to contest the next European elections in Northern Ireland.
‘There is a desire amongst a large section of the Northern Ireland electorate for a principled left wing candidate to challenge the conservative, unionist, nationalist and sectarian tribalism that passes as politics here.’, said the Party’s Northern Ireland Chairperson, Gerry Grainger.
A conference panel discussion addressed Welfare Reform, Health and Social Caremodels, youth unemployment and political structures in Northern Ireland with contributions from Dr Una Lynch, Les Allamby of the NI Law Centre, trade unionist and Party member Ciaran McGeough and Party General Secretary John Lowry.
